Gas Boiler or Electric Boiler?

A good boiler should last between 10 and 15 years, so when it's time to replace your old or broken-down boiler, it's important to make sure you select the right replacement - you don't want to end up regretting your choice for the next decade or so!

While pondering this important decision, you may find yourself wondering whether to go for a gas boiler or an electric boiler. Which is better? Well, here are a few things you may want to consider, courtesy of the friendly boiler experts here at ImpraGas:

Which is the cheaper option?

Gas costs 5p/kWh on average, whereas electricity costs 14p/kWH. So on the face of it, gas is by far the cheaper method for heating your home.

However, there are other factors to consider. While gas is cheaper than electricity per unit, the cost of the boiler itself will be higher if you choose gas. Gas boilers are also more difficult (and thus more expensive) to maintain and repair.

Which boilers are more energy-efficient?

On average, electric boilers run more efficiently than gas boilers. Even the best new gas boilers tend to operate under 90% efficiency, and that decreases over time.

Some will argue that electric boilers are more environmentally friendly across the board, but this isn't so black and white. Most of the UK's electricity is still generated from fossil fuels, so even if your boiler isn't directly fuelled by gas, it probably won't make a huge amount of difference to your overall environmental footprint. However, electric boilers and solar panels are a great combination - if you use solar panels to power your home, an electric boiler probably is the greener option after all.

Which boilers are easier to install?

The answer to this question may depend on your property. Some homes are not connected to a gas main. Houses without mains access sometimes rely on propane gas deliveries, but this can be inconvenient. Gas boilers also need to be connected to an outside wall (either directly or via piping).

If your property is on the smaller side and space is an issue, it's worth noting that electric boilers tend to be more compact than gas boilers. A combi boiler can serve as a water heater too, which will save you space and money.

How often does a boiler need to be replaced?

A boiler is a key component of your home - if something goes wrong with it you may be left without heating and hot water, which can be a real nightmare.

Unfortunately, this always seems to happen when you least expect it, leaving you wishing you’d replaced it when it was still hanging in there. Here's some advice about how long the average boiler should last and how often you should replace the boiler in your home.

How long is a boiler supposed to last?

A good boiler should last up to 10-15 years with minimal issues, as long as you do what you should to keep it in good working condition. This starts from as soon as you receive your new boiler, which should be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

A new boiler should be, at most, a once-in-a-decade investment, so you’ll want to make sure you're getting it right from day one. At ImpraGas, we offer a professional boiler installation service that ensures your boiler is installed to the highest standard. Our installations and inspections are only ever carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers who know exactly how to get the job done.

How often should I get my boiler serviced?

To make sure your boiler keeps performing well, it's vital to have your boiler serviced once a year. This annual servicing ensures that your boiler will run efficiently all year ‘round. Also, an annual service will often be a condition of your insurance policy and your boiler warranty agreement.

We offer a 10-year service plan with the boilers we install, which means that in the unlikely event of a breakdown, the manufacturer of your appliance will be out to assist you within 24 hours, at no extra cost! This is to ensure that your boiler lasts for its intended lifespan, if not longer.

That's why this year we have made NSPCC our Charity of the Year and will do what we can to help their cause.

  • We will continue to donate to NSPCC Childline and the Speak Out Stay Safe campaign.
  • Organising various staff fundraising opportunities including the Three Peaks Challenge, Skydiving, the Rutland Family Bike Ride and even just humble cake sales!
  • The ImpraGas team have recently signed up to the NSPCC campaign which supports children's mental health and encourages the Government to provide more funds for Childline. Sign the petition.
  • Continuing to utilise our social media to raise awareness of these campaigns.
  • Joseph will continue to visit schools and help raise awareness and support children who need it most.

We hope that you will help us support the NSPCC this year and donate to our JustGiving page. The NSPCC works tirelessly to prevent child abuse and help those who have suffered rebuild their lives. Please help us help them to continue to protect children who are at risk.
